Tim Winter (75-80)
Tim joined the Royal Navy as a Midshipman in 1985. After completing his basic training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, he went on to gain his BEng at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon in 1989. He then served at sea as a Lieutenant in HMS FEARLESS and HMS EXETER, with a stint ashore in the Portsmouth area, during which time he spent 4 months on exchange with the Royal New Zealand Navy.
In 1998 Tim was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and ran the ship and submarine damage control and firefighting school at HMS RALEIGH before going back to sea as the Marine Engineer Officer (Chief Engineer) in HMS CHATHAM in 2000 - 2002. After a year of staff training, during which he gained an MA in Defence Studies through King's College London, Tim went to work in MOD Main Building for 2 years.
Living in London during the week gave Tim the chance to refresh his enthusiasm for singing, by joining the London Oriana Choir. He also re-established his links with the Abbey by joining the Brotherhood of St Edward some 23 years after leaving the Choir School. Since joining, he has taken part in a number of high profile special Services, most notably the Papal visit and the Royal Maundy, but equally importantly the Sunday Eucharist from time to time. Tim has managed to balance the commute from his family home in Wiltshire, plus other commitments, to serve around one a month, with gaps of several months when away on Operations or Adventurous Training exercises. He says ‘It is always good to be back with the Brotherhood, as a vital and exclusive part of the Abbey family’.
Now a Commander, Tim returned to sea as the Engineer in HMS ILLUSTRIOUS, seeing her through to the end of her long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He then lead a Royal Navy and Royal Marines sailing and mountaineering expedition to the Antarctic and South Georgia in the centenary year of Shackleton's remarkable recovery of his team from the crushing ice floes of the Weddell Sea.
He flew down to the Falklands at the beginning of January 2016 to lead a Royal Navy and Royal Marines sailing and mountaineering expedition to the Antarctic and South Georgia. The vision was to stand on the shoulders of Shackleton, who a century ago led his team to safety from the catastrophic loss of his ship, the Endurance, in the frozen Weddell Sea, in what has been described as one of the most iconic survival stories of all time. Antarctic Endurance 2016 aims to inspire a new generation of adventurers in the Naval Service, celebrate the remarkable achievements of Shackleton and his men and educate the Armed Forces through an associated research programme.
Tim returned to the UK in March 2016 and a post at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, where he is a Mentor and guide for a syndicate of 12 mid-seniority Service Officers and Defence Civil Servants from UK and allied nations, conducting a 1-year course in Defence Studies, Operational Leadership and Management. This includes supporting the students in their studies for an MA, as directed by the King's College London academic staff.
Tim is a frequent server with the Brotherhood and takes over as Secretary of the association from February 2017.
